Stand On It

“When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the Lord called to Moses from within the cloud. To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain.”
Exodus 24:15–17 (NIV)

Build On It

Sometimes, I believe we underestimate the Presence of God. We rush through moments that were meant to shape us, overlook silence that was meant to still us, and forget that glory doesn’t always come in noise—but often in the waiting.

One of my favorite parts of this passage is that within the cloud, the glory of the Lord appeared as a consuming fire. Think about that—a fire that doesn't just burn, but consumes. It's not weak. It's not flickering. It's powerful, undeniable, and unquenchable.

When you hear the phrase, “God is a consuming fire,” what comes to mind?

We hear it often, but do we realize what it means?

  • It means His presence purifies.

  • It means nothing impure can stand before Him.

  • It means He is not just near—He is overwhelming in His holiness.

The Israelites saw fire, but Moses stepped into the cloud. One group watched from a distance; the other went closer. The fire wasn’t just to awe them—it was an invitation.

Let us not settle for standing at the foot of the mountain when we are called higher. Into the cloud. Into the fire. Into His glory.

God is a consuming fire—and He cannot be extinguished.

The question is: Will you stand in it, or will you stay watching from a distance?
